Date or کھجور (Urdu) or تمر (Arabic) is a species product of flowering plant related to palm family, is cultivated for its edible and sweet fruit. Dates are widely cultivated across the Middle East, North of Africa, and South Asia. Dates by virtue of naturalization are also grown in tropical and subtropical regions globally. It is estimated that dates total annual production globally reach 8.5 million metric tons out of which the Middle East and North of Africa are major contributors. Dates are farmed as a traditional crop in Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Iran, Morocco, Arizona, Florida, and California States of USA, Mexico. The top ten dates producing countries worldwide are Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Iran, United Arab Emirates, Algeria, Iraq, Pakistan, Oman, Tunisia, and Libya. The height of the date tree can typically reach 21 ~ 23 meters | 69 ~ 75 feet, either growing singly or through forming a clump with many stems coming from a single root system. The date fruit shape is in the form of oval-cylindrical, having 3 ~ 7 centimeters | 1.2 ~ 2.8 inches length, whereas the diameter is about 2.5 centimeters | 0.98 inches, with color ranging from bright red to bright yellow subject to variety. The dates fruit tree leaves length are 4 ~ 6 meters | 13 ~ 20 feet. Dates contain 61 ` 68% sugar by weight in dried form. Date Palms can take 4 ~ 8 years before beneficial commercial yields in 7 ~ 10 years. Dates production by mature date palms can reach 150 ~ 300 Pounds | 70 ~ 140 Kilograms. At the time of harvest, these dates in bunches are not ripe and in position to circulate for general public use or commercial gain so these date bunches must be thinned, bagged or covered to protect from animals, birds, weather as well and in order to get dates ripened in a safe way. To facilitate date palms growth well-drained deep sandy soils free of calcium carbonate with the ability to hold moisture are needed having alkali and/or pH of 8 ~ 11.

Dates fruit in dry or soft form can be eaten directly or as per your choice and taste may be pitted and stuffed with fillings, that is, almonds, candied orange or lemon peel, cream cheese, peanuts, walnuts. Dates can be eaten in many ways depending on the region’s taste and choice, that is, can be used in the pudding or flavored with chocolate fillings. In Pakistan, leather bags and pipe leakages are prevented by using viscous syrup made from ripe dates.
